Back from Consort in Motion's tour 2012

Dear Friends,

Just got back from a tour with my project, Consort in Motion featuring Russ Lossing, Thomas Morgan and Gerry Hemingway. We began our trip in Valencia, Spain with some great surprises. Our flight tickets were booked with Spanair who had just grounded a few weeks before... unfortunately, I had to buy two new tickets with Swiss Airline the same day... well... I had to sell a couple of CD's during the tour to cover the expenses :)

spanair

Spain though was amazing. Great audience and great people! If you check the press area, you will be able to read a few reviews by Tomajazz or Cuadernos de Jazz. They are also a few videos available on youtube. We then flew from Bilbao to Saalfelden (austria) with Lufthansa (this time no issues occurred...) to continue our tour. From sun to snow and from tapas to schnitzel. Neuchatel, Switzerland was our next stop before heading to Bruxelles and Eindhoven in the Netherlands for two superb concerts. Those shows were both filmed and recorded and I hope to be able to share this with you very soon! We then played in Munich and Vienna at the Porgy & Bess. The show was recorded and partly filmed. Please, check the gallery for some new videos! The grand finale was in Altburon, Switzerland.

Thank you all for your support! We look forward to being back in Europe for more shows in February 2013.

I am now heading to New York for some concerts and recordings with Pierre Favre, Michael Bates, Bobby Avey and François Houle.

New shop and new great reviews!

Dear all,

I have just finished installing a new shop linked to bandcamp. There, you can purchase all my releases as CD's/Vinyls or Immediate download in your choice of MP3 320, FLAC, or just about any other format you could possibly desire! And the best part of that shop is that you can listen to the entire track/album before to decide to buy it! So, please visit my store and enjoy the new features!

Both Consort in Motion and Boundless have received amazing reviews all over the world. Consort in Motion has received a four stars and 1/2 review in Downbeat
"... Samuel Blaser´s brilliantly realized new CD. The conservatory-trained Swiss trombonist reaches back to Italian composers of the Baroque and Renaissance, recontextualizing centuries-old themes and melodies via modern improvisation, more an act of resurrection than archaeology...". And Boundless has just received a CHOC in the famous french Jazz Magazine!

I am getting ready for my upcoming CD release tour with the Samuel Blaser Quartet feat. Marc Ducret, Banz Oester and Gerald Cleaver. Check our schedule to see where we are going to perform!

Stay tuned and wishing you well!

Interesting review from Sweden!

Dear Friends,

Lately, Consort in Motion received many great reviews from all over the world. However, we did also receive reviews from journalists that did not really enjoyed the album. It was good to read them and learn. Some of the negative points can be used to improve the music, etc. But, the other day, we received a very funny review from Sweden and I thought I should share it with you! Because some points are really hilarious!

"...musicians are playing for themselves..."
"...the trombone honk and Motian plays the drums as if he is testing the sound..."
"...Lossing delivers stray chords... the bass is absent..."
"...the arrangement of Monteverdi's are strange... I cannot find similarities with Jazz..."
"... A disc that should have stayed at the planning stage..."

Enjoy this and see you very soon!

Back from Poland/Germany/Switzerland and more

Dear Friends,

Just got back from Poland where I first toured with Michael Bates' Outside Sources. The band featured Jeff Davis on drums and Robin Vereheyen, a gifted belgium saxophone player. What a great band. The music was really happening! After Michael's tour, I had a day off before starting my solo trombone tour. I first played in Warsaw at Sklad Butelek, a great venue in Praga quarter. Then, I played at Piec Art in Krakow which is probably one of my favorite place in Poland. By the way, click on that link to read the review written by (Free) Jazz Alchemist. I finally ended my little solo tour in Zory, a small town south of Katowice, at the Easy Jazz Festival where I had great last show.

After Poland, I went straight to Switzerland where I started to rehearse with "La conspiration du Syphon" an orchestra based in the Jura. They actually premiered a piece I wrote for eleven instruments and voice. That was quiet exciting to finally hear the result of my work.

Consort in Motion finally got released in France. There will be some upcoming broadcasts and reviews soon. Come back soon for more news!

Samuel Blaser - Consort in Motion on Kind of Blue Records

Dear Friends,

I am very proud to announce that Consort in Motion will be released on Kind of Blue Records this April. The album features in-demand bassist Thomas Morgan, pianist Russ Lossing and legendary drummer Paul Motian.

We recorded the music on December 29th 2010 at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ with Dave Darlington and this is produced by the amazing Robert Sadin.

This record has a long story... everything was ready when I got in the plane direction JFK via Frankfort. Unfortunately, I decided to fly when the snowstorm decided to hit the East Coast... I was stuck in Germany for two days... we almost decided to cancel the whole session. But thanks to the Lufthansa staff, I was able to fly on the 28th with Singapore Airlines and jump in the session on time.

The music is based on compositions written by baroque Italian composers.
I have actually chosen to work essentially on Claudio Monteverdi's music.
There are also a couple of compositions written by Biaggio Marini and
Girolamo Frescobaldi. Quiet an exciting project I must say.

We will celebrate the release on March 29th at the Cully Jazz Festival. This time the band will feature Drew Gress on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums. A New York CD release party will also happen in May. This time, the concert will feature the original line up.

Please be in touch and come back for more news.
Wishing you well,

Samuel

Vilnius and more!

Hey Friends, Back from Vilnius where we had our last show at the Jazz Festival. Great public and warm welcome even if the weather was cold over there! Fortunately we had some vodka to warm our bodies before the show:) We hope to be back in Lituania soon! You can have a taste of that concert here.

Before that concert, we were in London where we played at the Vortex. The show was recorded by "Jazz on 3" and will be broadcasted in February. There's also a little video here that will give you an idea if the atmosphere.

After Frauenfeld on October 5th, we had three more shows in Switzerland: Zurich, Lausanne and Basel. All the performances were recorded by Jean-Marc Foussat for a release next year. Stay tuned!

I am now going on the road with another project featuring Lucien Dubuis and Luigi Galati. We will be performing in Germany, Poland and Swizerland. Please have a look to our schedule to see if we will be in your area.

Last but not least, this month two more albums got released: Bruno Tocanne New Songs on Instant Music Records and Pierre Favre Ensemble, Voyage on Intakt Records. Click on their names to listen and order a copy! Thanks again for visiting! Best, Samuel

Frauenfeld

Hey there, Today is off after traveling intensively every day. Very exhausting. After Münster we went to Passau and then crossed Germany to reach Enschede in the Netherlands where we had a great concert. By the way there is a little video on youtube. Click on that link to watch a couple of minutes of that concert. Yesterday was important since I presented two of my projects to the Generations Jazz Festival in Frauenfeld. I first played a set with Pierre Favre. I have to say it was pretty incredible, probably one of our best performance so far. After an hour break I did three sets with my quartet. All sets were recorded by the Radio. Tomorrow, we will be in Zürich. More news later and keep coming back on my website. Samuel

Münster

Dear Friends,

Here we go... I am on the road again! And very excited about this upcoming tour with my quartet. We just had our first gig tonight in Münster @ Cuba Kultur, a friendly little place. We expected to have just a few people but the club was packed! And it was amazing! Great public, great ears which is appreciable. After the show, it felt like we never stopped playing together! Our last gig was at the Jazzdor Festival in Strasbourg last November. Tomorrow we are heading off to Passau in Germany before going to Switzerland for our first gig in Bern. During this tour we will have also the chance to present our music in the Netherlands, England and Lithuania. For those who will miss our shows, don't worry, some of them will be recorded and an album will be released next year probably.

Please come back soon for more news. I will try to post a tour diary and will add some pictures...

Be well and wish you well, Samuel

Pieces of Old Sky new reviews

Dear friends,

I just got back from my November tour where I had some wonderful shows with my quartet in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Belgium and France. We recorded the two last shows for a possible release next year. Thank you to everyone who made those events a success! The quartet will be back on the road in October 2010 for a two weeks tour.

Pieces of Old Sky has received many great reviews lately all over. Please check out the press kit section for more information... Alan Young in his Lucid Culture said: "This is what free jazz ought to sound like. While there's definitely plenty of composition here, there's also an extraordinary amount of listening and the smart, thoughtful playing that good musicians do when they're all tuned into each other... This quiet, deft display of talent is nothing short of a stealth contender for one of the best jazz albums of 2009."

Thanks for visiting! Please come back soon for more news. Next year will be special...!

news from the road

Dear all,

I am right now in Mannheim, Germany, where I am performing with Peter Van Huffel, Sophie Tassignon and Michael Bates. We are actually promoting their album, Hufflignon, just released on Clean Feed Records.

Two weeks before that, I had a great show with drummer Ziv Ravitz at the middle Church in New York. Here's a picture by Laurence Donohue Greene

On March 29th, we gave an amazing concert at the Cully Jazz Festival with Malcolm Braff in front of a big crowd with ovation at the end of our performance! Wow, what a great feeling! THANK YOU!

Thanks everybody for supporting our music, hope to see you soon and come back for more news!

Samuel Blaser Quartet

We just got back home after a successful two weeks tour in Europe where we played seven concerts. A lot of critics have been written about our concerts and you can read some of them in the press kit. In September 2009, Pieces Of Old Sky, will be released on Clean Feed Records and there will be a release tour to promote this new album at the end of year 2009. Here's a picture of the band, ready to go to Germany.

A Conversation, Thomas Morgan had with an old man at Tygmont in Warsaw, before one of our concert [2008-05-07 Wed 23:28]

/We're sitting at the bar and he speaks to me in Polish./

Przepraszam, nie rozumiem po polsko.  [I'm not sure about the
spelling, but this means, "Pardon me, I don't understand."]

Ah, you don't speak Polish, of course.  English?

Yes.

Very good.  It is a long path to learn Polish.  It will take you
twenty years.  Tonight are you playing the same kind of program as
last night?

Yes.

Why don't you play normal jazz with a melody?  What you play is
nothing for the listener.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it.

We take a risk, we come to the concert, and we expect good American
musicians, not a young fellow like you.  In three years you will
understand.  When American musicians come, they usually play good
music, standards, and there are one hundred, two hundred people here.
But you come, and there are forty or fifty.
